Technical FAQs:

Q. Does EquationPlotter work with Macs or is it only for Windows?

A. EquationPlotter works well in both platforms. It also works with most browsers, although there are some issues with Netscape on the Mac.

Q. After entering an equation, no plot is generated. What's wrong?

A. The possible cause is improper formatting of input. Mathematica is picky about the sintax of built-in functions. For help, see the instructions on formatting input available on each plotter. Check also all fields of the form for possible mistakes. There have also been cases where the antivirus protection prevents the pictures from showing, especially if running Norton antivirus. You do not need to disable the protection, but rather configure the antivirus program to accept wmf files.

Q. What format do downloaded graphs have?

A. All downloaded images are "Windows Metafiles", files with extension .wmf. This is a native format for images recognized by Microsoft Word and Excel. These images do not open on a regular image editor, although they can be viewed with the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

Q. What is the advantage of wmf graphs vs. regular gifs or jpgs?

A. Windows Metafiles are high resolution images, not so gifs or jpgs. Windows Metafile images are also scalable, that is, the images can be resized once they have been imported into Word without losing quality. The images seen on the site are all gifs or jpgs. These can be copied and imported into word as well, resulting in a significant loss of quality. One of the main purposes of EquationPlotter is to aid in the production of high quality documents for printing purposes.

Q. Can the images be edited once they have been imported into Word?

A. Yes. Once the downloaded Windows Metafile images are in Word, users have all of the Word editing tools to add / delete details from the graphs.

Q. The Thumbnails in the Archives section do not lead to a new page. What's wrong?

A. EquationPlotter works best using IE or Netscape for both Windows or OS X. There are some issues with Safari that prevent the Javascript on these pages to work properly all the time. We are currently working to solve these issues and have full compatability on all browsers.

Q. Do I need to know Mathematica in order to use EquationPlotter?

A. No. Even though Mathematica is the power and main engine behind EquationPlotter, the user does not need to know any Mathematica, or have Mathematica installed on his/her machine. EquationPlotter provides a friendly interface to allow users to take advantage of the power of Mathematica without the need to learn about the Language. We do not hesitate - however - to recommend Mathematica as the leader in technical computation software.

Q. Do I need to be a Mathematics Teacher to become a member?

A. No. Anybody interested in the site can be a member.

Q. Sometimes the pages containing Applets do not load. What's wrong?

A. Usually refreshing the page will load the applet. If after this the applet still does not load, check your Java settings to make sure your configuration allows your browser to open and execute third party applets.
